Musings on the current season

'Tis the season of grant writing. As I sit here writing a blog post, I should be editing my National Science Foundation research grant, but I saw an article posted on the NPR website about a recent ad that Apple released for the iPhone. Here is the ad:

I must admit that one of the things that terrifies me about having children is the idea of teenagers, social media, and the devices (i.e. iPhones) that enable social media. However, I found this ad heartwarming -- perhaps a reminder that social media is, in reality, just a medium for human engagement with each other. That engagement looks so different than it did a generation ago, and we can debate the merits or drawbacks of these changes in our society, but the reality is that we are not going back to the way that we used to engage with each other before the internet and mobile devices. So in this holiday season, rather than longing for the simple ways of the past, let's be thankful for the technology we have now to connect with each other -- the love and friendship and memories today are just as strong as they were a generation ago, even if they are expressed in different ways.
